Guest post: My travels from A to Z by Vanessa

I have to tell you, I love having guest bloggers. Not only does it let me bank some posts for the next time I’m super-busy, I’m getting far too many great travel ideas. Vanessa and I know each other internettily, through a pretty great bunch of real-life mutual friends, and through our shared love of Paris.

To join the exciting world of guest travel blogging, email your own travels from A to Z to or check out my guest post page.

A: Age you went on your first trip.

4 or 5. My dad travelled thought the Maritime provinces [in Eastern Canada] so my mom and I would often go with him. My first flight was to Newfoundland when I was 10.

B: Best (foreign) beer you’ve had and where.

Kreik in Belgium.

C: Cuisine (favorite).

D: Destination (favorite and least favorite).

Favorite – Paris
Least fave – White Plains, New York

E: Event you experienced abroad that made you say “wow.”

Driving through the Hollywood Hills at night and looking at all of the beautiful giant homes.

F: Favorite mode of transportation.

Trains – the express trains like the TGV and ICE

G: Greatest feeling while traveling.

The high you get when you see something you’ve dreamed about and only seen through photos and on tv in real life. [Krista: So true. I just about passed out when I saw New York for the first time.]

H: Hottest place you’ve traveled to

Sonoma, California: 110 during the day, but it was so dry it was great. [Krista: As we say, it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.]

I: Incredible service you’ve experienced and where.

Last time I was in Paris I got really sick, my mom went to the pharmacy and they kindly called a doctor who did a house call to the apartment where I was staying. They were all very lovely.

J: Journey that took the longest.

A night at Charles de Gaulle airport, then CDG to Frankfurt, to Toronto to Halifax.

K: Keepsake from your travels.

I grab a postcard and try to pick up Christmas ornaments if I can find them. I also keep receipts, ticket stubs and have them on a memory board.

L: Letdown site and where.

Brussels, I think it would be a cool place to live but I didn’t love it when visiting.

M: Moment where you fell in love with travel.

My first trip to Florida, we were upgraded to business class on the flight and then I spent a week in Fort Lauderdale and then went to Disney World. I talked about it so much my parents took me again the next year.

N: Nicest hotel you’ve stayed at.

The Hotel Monaco in San Francisco, they had pet goldfish if you were lonely.

O: Obsession. What are you obsessed with taking pictures of while traveling?

I like taking photos of the people I’m traveling with, and desserts.

P: Passport stamps. How many and from where?

I just submitted my passport for renewal today. I had around 20 stamps or so, from the US and Europe.

Q: Quirkiest attraction you’ve visited and where.

Catacombs in Paris, it’s very cool. I’ve heard it’s a busy attraction but when I went I was the only person which made it extra creepy. [Krista: That is creepy, not sure I could do it!]

R: Recommended site, event or experience.

Climb the tower at Notre Dame, everyone goes up the Eiffel Tower but because Paris is so flat it’s not a great view. Notre Dame is in the heart of the city and you can get the gargoyles in the photos.

S: Splurge. Something you have no problem forking over money for while traveling.

Attractions and museums – I figure I’ll regret not seeing it more than not liking it and wondering if I missed out. And I always get dessert and ice cream!

T: Touristy thing you’ve done.

Gone to a taping of Jay Leno, it was a cool experience though.

U: Unforgettable travel memory.

Taking a water taxi from the airport to Venice, it’s such a beautiful, unique place. [Krista: this photo is gorgeous and full of details, I can’t stop looking at it!]

V: Visa. How many and for where.

1 – a student study visa for my time in France. There was a lot of red tape and I only got it 2 days before I left!

W: Wine. Best glass of wine while traveling and where?

In a Paris hotel with friends from home that I hadn’t seen in months, we drank it and ate a baguette with stinky cheese and caught up on life.

X: eXcellent view and from where.

Edinburgh from Arthur’s Seat

Y: Years spent traveling.

24ish so far

Z: Zealous sports fans and where.

France during the France v. England soccer game.
[It’s Krista again] Thanks, Vanessa! See how easy that was, everyone else? If you have questions for our intrepid guest-blogger, fire away in the comments.
