Friday photos: Dancing with chinelos at Cinco de Mayo in New York

Luck on top of luck on top of a little more luck landed me in New York for Cinco de Mayo this year. When my plan was coming together, one thing I wanted to do was enjoy some Cinco de Mayo activities that didn’t involve a bar crawl.

The internet being the boundless travel resource it is, I found the details of a Cinco de Mayo parade up on Central Park West on the Upper West Side. I didn’t make it in time to enjoy the whole thing, I did arrive at exactly the right time to catch a troupe of chinelos, a costumed dancing troupe popularized in the Mexican state of Morelos.

All of this information was picked up after the fact thanks to some diligent Googling, all I knew at the time was they were having a blast. So much so, they dragged my friend into the group to dance down CPW while I was cluelessly snapping photos. I found her a short time later and we celebrated with some cinnamon sugar-covered churros.
